Texas Climate Report: October 2010
Two things that were severely lacking during the month of October were precipitation and the normal cooler autumn temperatures. For the most part average maximum temperatures were stuck in the 80s across the state and all average maximum temperatures were above normal for this time of year. El Paso only saw one day during the whole month of October that was below normal for their daily average temperatures. During the rest of the month El Paso recorded average temperatures 3.5°F above normal, a feat the city has not accomplished since 2009. Brownsville saw the state’s highest average maximum temperature at 87.4°F, while Del Rio saw the state’s absolute maximum temperature of 99°F. Mean average temperatures were above normal at all the major stations except Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Victoria, and Waco. On the other hand, even though the whole state recorded warmer than normal average maximum temperatures, the majority of the state saw lower than normal average minimum temperatures.
Rain seemed to be lacking across the state expect in West Central Texas and the southern Panhandle. Lubbock was the only station reporting above normal rainfall, recording 2.61" of precipitation and 2.51" was recorded in San Angelo, just below normal. Brownsville, College Station, Midland and Victoria only received a trace of rain for the month. The lack of rain and warmer temperatures forced 68 counties across the state to issue outdoor burn bans. The threat of wild fires was also increased across much of East Texas. In just one week the extremely dry conditions caused 190 fires across 1,500 acres. As the month came to a close, the United States Drought Monitor designated portions of East Texas and the Big Bend area in moderate and severe drought.
