Texas Climate Report: April 2011
The warmer and drier than normal trend to the weather continued across the entire state of Texas during April 2011. For the seventh month in a row, almost all of West Texas received no measurable precipitation. Five of the first order stations including, Brownsville, College Station, El Paso, Lubbock, and Midland, also received no precipitation during the month of April further worsening drought conditions and increasing the wildfire risk across the state. All of Texas continued to be designated as being in a drought this month and by the end of April, the US Drought Monitor had increased the percentage of the state that was classified as in an exceptional drought (D4) from 4.81% to 17.16%. During the month of April only three first order stations picked up more than a half an inch of rain including Abilene (2.44"), Dallas-Fort Worth (2.46"), and Waco (1.87").
Several severe wild fires occurred as a result of the current drought burning hundreds of thousands of acres of Texas land and destroying dozens of homes. By the close of the month, 211 of the counties in Texas were under an outdoor burn ban. Every first-order station in the state reported mean monthly average, maximum, and minimum temperatures above normal, for the second month in a row. Three of the first order stations, including College Station, Galveston and Wichita Falls all set new records for absolute maximum temperature. The mean monthly maximum temperature in San Angelo was an astounding 12.4°F above normal. College Station broke multiple records for the highest maximum temperatures and the highest minimum temperatures throughout the whole month of April.
Abilene, the only first-order station with above normal precipitation during April 2011, picked up nearly all of the rainfall on the 24th as a severe thunderstorm accompanied by several reports of tornadoes and hail measured at 4.50" brought nearly two-and-a-half inches of rain. During the last week of the month, the same storm system that brought the deadliest outbreak of tornadoes the United States has seen in decades to Alabama, spawned dozens of reports of tornadoes in Texas but fortunately the Lone Star state was spared the massive damage and loss of human life seen in Alabama.
