Texas Climate Report: February 2011
Weather in Texas during the month of February went from one extreme to the next. At the beginning of the month an arctic blast, now being called the "Big Freeze of February 2011" hit all of Texas and caused many problems. School closures, rolling blackouts, severe snowstorms, crop damages, and motor vehicle accidents were all results of the "Big Freeze" that plagued the state. Dallas saw the coldest weather it has seen in twenty years and in El Paso record low temperatures caused the city's generators to shut down, leaving most of the city without power. The Super Bowl in Arlington was not exempt from weather issues this month. Super Bowl officials say that six Cowboys stadium workers were injured when patches of snow and ice fell off the stadium roof and hit them. Even though the beginning of the month was extremely cold, on average most first-order stations recorded above normal mean monthly maximum temperatures. Del Rio's absolute maximum temperature for the month almost broke the 100°F mark but came in one degree short at 99°F. Average minimum temperatures were below normal for every single first-order station. El Paso set a monthly record with an absolute minimum temperature of 1°F. Although several first-order stations were hit by snowstorms overall precipitation was scare during the month of February. The only first-order station to receive more than an inch of precipitation was Waco, with 1.82", an indication that drought is affecting most of the state. According to the US Drought Monitor, the entire state of Texas has drought conditions with the exception of some areas in the Coastal Bend and the Panhandle. Drought conditions in the Big Country accompanied by warmer temperatures, windy weather, and low humidity levels caused several wildfires. One of the wildfires burnt down 60 homes and burned more than 32,000 acres. By the end of month, it appeared that the cold weather from early in the month was a thing of the past when Laredo's absolute daily maximum temperature hit 103°F on the 27th.
