Texas Climate Report: May 2011
By the close of May 2011, the state of Texas had experienced one of its driest 6-month periods since statewide precipitation records started being kept back in 1895. Since the beginning of December 2010, the vast majority of the western half of the state has received less than 2 inches of precipitation, with most of the Trans Pecos picking up little to no rainfall during the past six months. For instance, El Paso has recorded only 0.27" of precipitation during this period and is working on 118 days without measurable rainfall. Outside of North Central and northern East Texas, most areas saw less than 50% of normal precipitation both during May 2011 and over the past six months. The US Drought Monitor designated large areas of the High Plains, the Low Rolling Plains, the Trans Pecos, the Edwards Plateau, South Central Texas, the Upper Coast, and the Lower Valley as being in exceptional drought (D4) on May 31st. In fact, all 10 climate divisions had at least a small area with D4 status on this depiction (http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/archive/20110531/pics/TX_dm_110531.png) and more than 50% of the state had D4 designation.
Monthly average temperatures were above normal across most of the state, with the exceptions being the regions picking up above normal precipitation, e.g., Dallas-Fort Worth. Perhaps the hottest spot during May was Laredo, which surpassed 100°F a total of 21 days and had the highest temperature in the entire United States a total of 19 days. May 28th, 2011 was perhaps the warmest day in May ever across western Texas as Abilene, San Angelo, and Wichita Falls all broke maximum temperature records for the month of May, with Amarillo accomplishing the same feat the following day. Laredo topped out at 112°F on the 28th, the highest temperature in the United States during May 2011 and the third warmest day in May in the city’s history. Earlier in the month, a very strong May cold front brought some record-breaking cool air to much of Texas. On the morning of the 3rd, the minimum temperature in Midland dropped to 34°F which tied the all-time coldest May temperature. The following morning, the record minimum temperature for the month of May was tied in Beaumont-Port Arthur, which bottomed out at 45°F.
May started out with a bang in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with several reports of large hail throughout the Metroplex on the 1st accompanying the cold front that brought the unusually cold weather to Texas at the beginning of the month. Winds approaching hurricane force caused some structural damage to property in counties north and west of Fort Worth on the 11th with thunderstorms that rolled through North Central Texas. The most active weather of the month occurred as a frontal boundary stalled out over North Texas for several days starting on the 21st before finally advancing eastward on the 25th. Hail exceeding 4.5" in diameter fell in Burnet County on the 21st with a storm that later spawned a tornado in Williamson County. On the 22nd, 3.0" hail fell in Brown and Clay counties and high winds caused widespread tree damage in Wichita County on the same day as the deadly Joplin, MO tornado. The National Weather Service confirmed the touchdown of nine tornadoes in North Texas during a severe weather outbreak on the 24th and one fatality due to power lines that were knocked over by straight-line winds.
