Texas Climate Report: November 2011
Every part of the state saw above average temperatures for the month of November, with all of the stations seeing above 80 degrees at least one day this month. Although heat played a role in the month of November, so did the cold. Many parts of the state saw their first freeze of the season, caused by two powerful fronts that pushed through Texas, one between November 15th and 17th and the other between November 25th and 28th. Both of these fronts dropped temperatures over 15 degrees for most of Texas and brought much needed rainfall for the state. Places such as Austin benefited the most from the fronts with close to or over a half an inch of rain recorded with each passing. Although the frontal passages did bring rain to drought stricken Texas they didn't come without their fair share of destruction as well. Many of the cold fronts brought powerful storms to the state complete with heavy rain, strong wind, and even a few tornadoes as was the case for Northeast of Houston on November 8th with the passage of a cold front and an upper-level disturbance. Though rainfall was beneficial for all of Texas it still wasn't enough to get the region out of the severe drought that is still plaguing the state. All of the major cities within the state other than Houston and Austin recorded a precipitation deficit during November.

Bold-italics indicate a value broke or tied the record from a previous year. *Dep.: Departure of the monthly average temperature from the 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Perc. Norm.: Monthly precipitation total divided by 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Deg. Days: Computed daily as the departure of the daily average temperature from 65°F and aggregated over the entire month. *Heating degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a -1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. *Cooling degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a +1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. |
