Texas Climate Report: April 2012
April, like March, was well above normal for the state of Texas with every city recording above average temperatures for the month. All cities were at least 3°F above normal and cities in the High Plains broke record temperatures by shooting past the century mark as a high pressure system moved across the area over the 25st and 26th of the month. The month also came with a surprising lack of rain compared to the previous two months with the majority of cities coming in at just below normal precipitation levels.
The majority of the rain that fell on the state came in severe weather outbreaks, which occured on the 3rd, 14th, and the 26th. The most impressive of these systems was the outbreak on the 3rd which caused a reported 12 tornadoes to touch down in and around the DFW area as a low pressure system combined with a cold front to form supercell thunderstorms directly over the metroplex. One EF3 tornado touched down in Forney, while an EF2 touched down in Arlington and Lancaster. Both of these twisters caused significant damage and the cities declared a state of emergency. Hundreds of buildings were damaged in the event, but luckily, there were no fatalities reported.
The drought continued to keep its grip on the state's western half as many portions along the Permian Basin and in the Big Bend still remained under Exceptional drought conditions. Luckily, enough rain had fallen to whittle away at all portions of the state where D4(exceptional) conditions were experienced. Drought dropped from 14% of the state to 9% of the state from the beginning to the end of the month. The Climate Prediction Center reports that the drought is expected to intensify across Texas west of Interstate 35, while the eastern portion of the state remains in the clear.

Bold-italics indicate a value broke or tied the record from a previous year. *Dep.: Departure of the monthly average temperature from the 1981-2010 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Perc. Norm.: Monthly precipitation total divided by 1981-2010 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Deg. Days: Computed daily as the departure of the daily average temperature from 65°F and aggregated over the entire month. *Heating degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a -1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. *Cooling degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a +1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. |
