Texas Climate Report: December 2012
December 2010 was drier and warmer than normal across the vast majority of Texas, leading to an increase of drought conditions across the state in terms of severity and spatial coverage. The main culprit for the drier and warmer than normal weather were moderate-to-strong La Nina conditions persisting in the Pacific Ocean, a pattern that should continue through the rest of this winter and is a significant contrast to the El Nino that brought much cooler and wetter than normal weather last winter. Because the first few months of 2010 brought above normal precipitation throughout Texas, there was a regeneration of vegetation following the 2008-2009 drought. However, the recently developed drought has dried out much of the vegetation, leaving it as fuel that is extremely susceptible to wildfires. Numerous fires were reported during December, including a fire that destroyed more than 900 acres of grasslands in Oldham and Deaf Smith counties.
Precipitation was quite scarce in December 2010 in all areas of Texas not in the northern Panhandle, North Central Texas near the Red River, and the Upper Texas Coast. Most of the western half of the state received less than 0.10" of precipitation. Midland picked up 0.02" of rain on the 23rd, the first measurable rainfall since September 25th. Nearby Odessa ended 2010 without seeing measurable precipitation for the final 97 days of the year. The 0.02" of December precipitation in Del Rio (3% of normal) equaled the total precipitation of the previous two months combined. Del Rio is representative of a drought situation that worsened in Southwest Texas during the past month, and much of the region was depicted as having extreme drought conditions (D3) by the last United States Drought Monitor map of 2010. A separate area of D3 drought developed throughout December in Southeast Texas and includes College Station, which has seen only 16% of its normal precipitation over the past 3 months.
Mean temperatures were above normal across most of the state, with the most abnormal warmth across the Panhandle, Trans Pecos, and Edwards Plateau. Monthly mean maximum temperatures in Lubbock, El Paso, and San Angelo were all more than 6 degrees above normal and across the state high temperatures were much warmer relative to normal than low temperatures. In fact, several stations reported below normal mean monthly minimum temperatures with above normal temperatures. One example was Del Rio, where the monthly mean maximum temperature (60.1°F) was more than 4 degrees above normal and the mean minimum temperature (38.1°F) was more than 3 degrees below normal. The large diurnal variation in temperatures occurs in the presence of a dry weather pattern.
