Texas Climate Report: March 2012
The month of March was a warm one for everyone in the state of Texas with temperatures well above normal all across the state. The warm temperatures were coupled with substantial rainfall across the state bringing up reservoir levels and increasing soil moisture content. Overall the month was quiet as far as severe weather with only two outbreaks occurring, one on the 11th and the other on the 20th. Both of these events brought substantial rainfall to Texas especially east of the Edwards Plateau. On the 20th areas around Waco received upwards of 6" of rain bringing flooding to Central Texas and causing flood warnings to be issued all across north, central, and east Texas. Two tornadoes touched down west of San Antonio in this event, damaging six homes, yet causing no fatalities.
Temperatures were well above normal all across the state with nearly every major city recording record high temperatures and the entire state from the Rio Grande north recorded average temperatures more than 4 degrees above normal. Record rainfall totals were also recorded in several cities as well. The drought also improved by leaps and bounds east of Interstate 35 with no drought or dry conditions expanding to encompass 16.55% of the state, a rise from 6% at the beginning of the month. West of Interstate 35 was a different story, for the drought grew in intensity in the Panhandle and maintained or slightly improved around Big Bend and the Permian Basin. Burn bans have continued to decrease across the state as only 98 counties had burn bans at the beginning of the month a drop from when all but three counties were under burn bans in September.
