Texas Climate Report: November 2012
Great swaths of Texas saw no precipitation at all this month, and every major metropolitan area saw less than 30% of normal rainfall. The only region in the state that recorded average rainfall was near Roma, Texas where the majority of the rainfall for the month fell on November 24 when a high pressure system preventing rain across the rest of Texas brought moist air into the Rio Grande Valley. Any rainfall that did fall across the state was due to the passage of cold fronts on the 11th and the 27th both of which skirted the state or passed too quickly to bring any reprieve from the drought. Temperatures ranged across the state from much above average in the west to below normal in the east. In the Panhandle and Big County temperatures overall ranged between 6 and 9 degrees above normal, while near Beaumont temperatures were approximately normal to slightly below normal.
With the absence of precipitation the drought roared back to life for the majority of Texas, leaving only the regions surrounding Nacogdoches in the east and Fort Stockton in the west drought free. At the beginning of the month 57% of the state was considered by the U.S. Drought Monitor to be under drought conditions, but by the end of the month that number jumped up to 80%. The Climate Prediction Center anticipates the drought to persist and intensify across all but Northeast Texas and for temperatures to be above average this winter.
