Texas Climate Report: November 2013
November was much colder than average all across the state this year, all thanks to a series of strong cold fronts that brought arctic air and even a little early season winter weather. The large majority of the rain seen across the state was due to the passage of these cold fronts, but because of the fast moving nature of several cold fronts, precipitation was below normal for much of the northern half of the state. Fronts tend to slow down as they move south, so the Rio Grande Valley as well as the Southeastern portion of the state came out to roughly average, to above average precipitation. The Rio Grande came out well above average after a slow moving front on the 7th produced as much as three inches of rain.
The first freeze of the year for many Texans was attributed to a cold front passage on the 13th, but the real story was the Thanksgiving week cold front that was accomponied by a low pressure center from the west. This system brought the season's first snowfall to the Panhandle where around three inches of snow fell from Amarillo towards Lubbock, and also dangerous icing conditions in the Big Country and along the Red River. This cold front also gave Central Texas a tast of winter with icy precipitation falling, but not sticking to the ground.
Overall the drought improved for the Eastern half of Texas where drought free conditions are the general rule from Interstate 35 and east. To the west of this line drought conditions are still in place and continue to slowly deteriorate.
