Texas Climate Report: September 2013
The month of September was wet nearly all over, with nearly every major city recording at or above normal monthly precipitation. Frontal passages occurred on subsequent weekends all throughout the month, and coupled with strong southerly flow due to a stagnant high pressure system over the gulf for the mid to late part of the month allowed for moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to make its way into the state. On the days without rainfall the temperatures were well above normal, with the highest temperature anomalies in the northern half of the state. From the 19th to the 21st the remnants of Hurricane Manuel along with a slow moving cold front brought the greatest precipitation to the state with 2 inches of rain or more seen from Abilene to Houston. The majority of the rain that fell in the month did occur during the latter half of the month onward.
The high precipitation throughout the end of the month took a chunk out of the drought, which started with Severe drought covering most of the state. by mid-month Extreme drought had moved to control a large portion of East and Central Texas, but by the beginning of October this had eroded down to only Moderate drought from Dallas to Houston and San Antonio, with the Golden Triangle region out of drought altogether.
