College Station Monthly Summary: April 2000

The Brazos Valley experienced a return to normal temperatures during the month of April. The mean monthly temperature was slightly below normal, a break from the pattern of above-normal temperatures recorded in previous months. One new temperature record was set, on the 23rd, and nine temperatures were near records. However, precipitation once again failed to reach normal amounts, as drought conditions continue to plague the area. Easterwood Field was 1.42" below normal for the month of April, increasing the year-to-date deficit. On the 1st, a low pressure system centered over West Texas triggered showers and thunderstorms which brought much needed rain to the Brazos Valley through the 3rd of the month. The lowest temperature of the month, a chilly 38°F, occurred on the 4th after the cold front associated with this system moved through. After a brief warm spell, more rain and cooler temperatures returned as a frontal system moved into the area on the 7th. Another cool front moved through on the 11th, bringing cooler temperatures and rain yet again. However, warmer weather returned as high temperatures remained above 80°F from the 15th through the end of the month.
