College Station Monthly Summary: April 2006

The Brazos Valley started off warm and dry for April 2006. For the first seven days of the month, the average departure from normal was 9.5°F, with record or near record temperatures. A record high minimum temperature was set on the 1st with a minimum temperature of 71°F. A dry cold front brought some relief to the region on the 8th. The temperatures remained close to normal for the next few days until the heat came on again. Temperatures were above average from the 11th through the 25th; with the average departure for normal during this time was 6.6°F. The month reported its first measurable rainfall on the 20th as thunderstorms associated with a dryline moved across the area. There was one storm report in Bryan related to wind damage caused by these storms. A squall line also moved through the area overnight between the 20th and 21st resulting in 1.10" of rainfall. This front did not bring any relief to the warm condition, but a strong cold front, which moved through the area on the 25th, did. The cold front, which reduced temperatures from a high of 85°F on the 25th to a high of 73°F on the 26th, also brought some severe weather to the College Station area. Ping-pong ball to golf ball size hail was reported in areas around the Texas A&M campus. Rainfall from this system totaled 0.62". Temperatures warmed up quickly after the front passed, but another system pushed into the Bryan/College Station region on the 29th. A squall line developed along a frontal boundary and produced 0.63" of rainfall on the morning of the 29th. The monthly average of 73.1°F was 5.1°F above normal, while the precipitation total of 2.45" was 0.75" below normal. The average minimum temperature was 62.7°F, which is 5.8°F above normal.
