College Station Monthly Summary: August 2004

August 2004 was rather cool for the Bryan/College Station area. Typical summer weather dominated during the first week of the month with temperatures climbing up to 98°F, the highest temperature of 2004 for the Brazos Valley. On the 6th, a cold front moved across the area and cooled things down. The area remained dry until the 10th when 1.06" of precipitation fell due to a low pressure system centered just offshore in the Gulf. Clouds hung over the area until the 12th when a strong cold front swept across the state. Between the 12th and 18th, there were 11 near records set for lowest maximum or lowest minimum temperature. Temperatures warmed following the frontal system, and the weather was dry until the 19th when a low pressure system began to move across Texas. The frontal boundary associated with the low caused five consecutive days of rain over College Station. The last full week of August began with a return to warmer temperatures before another cold front hit on the 28th. Scattered showers brought the monthly precipitation for August up to 2.50", only 0.13" below normal. For the year, College Station is a gaudy 16.69" above normal, and only 8" of rain are needed in the remaining four months to have one of the 10 wettest years in College Station history. The average temperature for the month was 2.4°F below normal, and the average maximum was 3.9°F below normal. Through August, College Station has yet to hit 100°F, and if this trend continues, it would be the first time since 1983 that College Station did not top the century mark during an entire year.
