College Station Monthly Summary: August 2008
August 2008 in College Station brought three distinct periods of temperatures: very warm, cooler, and right around average. The first period, which brought noticeably above average mean temperatures, occurred during the first 14 days of the month or so. Temperatures varied from 2.5°F to 4.5°F above average, with 5 of those 14 days reaching at least 100°F. Two new records were set for highest minimum temperature and several near records were recorded. Some much needed rain and a cool down occurred on the 4th, when Tropical Storm Eduoard "hit" Houston and temperatures most of the day hovered around 75°F. The next 10 days saw below average mean temperatures, anywhere from 0.5°F below average to 7.5°F on the 19th, which set a new record low maximum temperature. Again, several near record low maximum temperatures were seen. During this 10-day period, measureable rain was recorded 6 times. Still, these lower than average temperatures, caused by a powerful low that aided much of Texas with some rainfall, made for a pleasant, albeit soggy, middle of August. The remaining few days in August saw roughly average maximum temperatures, while minimum temperatures were above average for those few remaining days. There was a 0.20" of rain recorded during this last period, which brought the total precipitation for August to 6.49", roughly 4" above average. This abundance of rainfall for August, however, has helped make up the difference for an otherwise unusually dry summer in June and July. For the year, College station is now only 1.78" below average, in much better shape than when August began.
