College Station Monthly Summary: February 1998

While the number of near temperature records in the Brazos Valley caught our attention throughout January, well above normal precipitation amounts took center stage in February. College Station received almost exactly twice the normal amount of rainfall for the month at Easterwood Field. Precipitation was both frequent and intense across the region in February, as shown by the following two characteristics of the month's rainfall. First, there is only one other February in the history of observations at Easterwood Field in which the number of rain days (14 in 1959) exceeded the 12 days in February 1998. Second, the frequent rain was accompanied by intense rain. Three separate days with greater than an inch of precipitation occurred at Easterwood Field, representing only the second time in the 47-year history of observations that this much rain fell on three or more days in February. The other year which can boast this claim is 1992, when College Station observed greater than 1 inch of precipitation on four different days in February, and greater than 2 inches of precipitation on three of those four days.
