College Station Monthly Summary: February 2002

The Brazos Valley experienced below normal temperatures for the predominant part of the month. However, this month saw only one record broken, which occurred on the 27th with the 3rd lowest temperature ever recorded in February. The previous record set on 1977 of 31°F was shattered by an amazing 14°F when a continental Arctic air mass filtered down from Canada. Although the air mass was extremely frigid, it was short-lived, and moderated within 3 days. Ironically the maximum wind gust of 38 mph did not occur with the Arctic front, but rather on the 21st with a weak frontal passage through the area. Three rain days this month amounted to 1.63" of precipitation, but increased the water deficit to 2.47" for the year. Precipitation was suppressed by the domination of high pressure over the region for a large part of the month.
