College Station Monthly Summary: January 2001

The Bryan/College Station area experienced a fairly cold month of January as the mean monthly temperature was 0.9°F below normal (47.6°F). In fact January 2001 was the first below-normal January since 1997. Temperatures dipped below freezing nine times during the month, the lowest coming on the 3rd and 20th, when temperatures bottomed out at 24°F. Rainfall during the month occurred often, yet amounted to little. Only 2.44" (-0.21" below average) fell on 10 different days. January began with frigid temperatures due to a cold front which moved through the area on New Year’s Eve. After a brief warm-up, temperatures once again dropped and 0.70" of rain fell in 24 hours when a low pressure system developed over South Texas. Temperatures remained relatively cool until the last week of January as a series of cold fronts moved through the state. Easterwood Field recorded precipitation on six of seven days from the 13th to the 19th as a result of these fronts.
