College Station Monthly Summary: January 2002

The Bryan/College Station area experienced extreme temperature variability in January. The beginning of the month saw temperatures well below normal. However, the middle of the month brought a return to more normal temperatures. The last nine days were unseasonably warm with four records tied or broken. Precipitation for January was about half of what should be expected with more than half of the month’s total precipitation falling on the 5th as Easterwood Airport recorded 1.03" in a 24-hour period. The highest wind gust for the month, 25 mph, was recorded on five separate days: the 12th, 24th, 29th, 30th, and 31st. These wind gusts were not all associated with frontal passages as would be expected during the month of January. The gusts during the last three days of the month were due to strong southerly flow off of the Gulf of Mexico.
