College Station Monthly Summary: January 2010

The first month of the new year brought a wide range of temperatures that left the citizens of College Station not sure if they should be wearing shorts or a jacket. Temperatures were much below average for the first half of the month and much above average for the second half of the month. The average temperature on the 8th was 25°F below normal, and just 12 days later on the 20th, the average temperature was 19°F above normal. An Arctic blast during the beginning of the month produced a daily high of only 31°F on the 8th, breaking the old record set back in 1988. College Station was no stranger to cold nights this month, including a record low temperature of 18°F set on the 9th, which broke the old record of 29°F set back in 1962. Although there were several cold fronts during January, there was not a significant amount of moisture this month. The monthly total precipitation was nearly 3 inches of rain and 0.38" below normal. On the 28th-29th, 1.71" of rain were recorded, the highest 1-day total for the month. As the month came to a close, temperatures once again dropped well below normal, ushering in a very cold start to February.
