College Station Monthly Summary: November 1997

November began with high pressure over the Brazos Valley. As this high moved out of the region to the east, a frontal system pushed its way into Texas from the Northwest and much cooler than normal temperatures were observed starting on the 6th. Another high pressure system set up on the 9th over Louisiana and Mississippi, pushing moisture into Texas from the Gulf of Mexico. Combined with an approaching cold front that crossed our region on the 10th, storms formed over a good portion of East Texas. It was the start of five consecutive rain days in College Station. Another cold air mass moved over the Brazos Valley on the 14th. By the 17th, average daily temperatures dropped to as much as 20°F below normal. Average daily temperatures were unseasonably warm during the final week of November. Strong thunderstorms produced heavy rainfall across the region on the 28th, when College Station received 1.60" of rain in a 3-hour period.
