College Station Monthly Summary: October 1997

The first half of October was warm and wet across the Brazos Valley. The highest monthly temperature of 92°F was reached on the 1st, and maximum daily temperatures remained in the upper 80s throughout most of the first week. With a high pressure system set up to our east and a low pressure system set up to our west, persistent southerly flow brought warm air and an abundance of moisture to the region from the Gulf of Mexico. Ten consecutive rain days resulted from this persistent flow, starting on the 4th (0.01") and ending on the 13th (3.20"). The string of days was ended as a cold front passed through the region, sparking intense storms on the 13th followed by much cooler and drier air during the third week of the month. Another cold air mass moved over the Brazos Valley during the last week of October, dropping maximum daily temperatures into the lower 60s and daily minimum temperatures below 40°F for the first time since early April.
