College Station Monthly Summary: October 2005

October started off very hot and dry, with three record highs in the first five days of the month, and an average departure from the average temperature of +9.2°F. Relief came on the 7th in the form of a cool front, which dropped the high from 90°F on the 6th to 70°F on the 7th. However, only a trace of precipitation came with the front, which brought the total of consecutive days without precipitation to 39 days, which was broken on the 10th when 0.97" of rain. Over the 10th and 11th, a total of 1.56" of precipitation fell at Easterwood Field, bringing much needed relief from the dry conditions. However, the monthly total of 2.11" was still only exactly half of the normal and brought the year-to-date total to 24.44", which is 8.82" below normal. Despite the hot and dry start to the month, a cold front that moved through on the 24th brought much cooler than average temperatures to the Brazos Valley. A low of 38°F on both the 25th and 26th were records and the average departure from normal over the 24th through the 26th was -12°F degrees. Overall, the monthly mean temperature was 71.0°F, 0.5°F above normal. All of the monthly precipitation came on the 10th, 11th, and 31st, with totals of 0.97", 0.59", and 0.55", respectively.
