College Station Monthly Summary: September 2001

Bryan/College Station experienced slightly below average temperatures for the month of September, breaking a string of five consecutive months with above average temperatures. It was also a far cry from a year ago, when temperatures reached 100°F eight times, including an all-time record of 112°F. During September 2001, maximum temperatures reached above 90°F only 15 days, two days less than normal. The Brazos Valley also received above average precipitation, with 8.80" recorded at Easterwood Field. This continued the trend of excessive rainfall, with the yearly total for 2001 at 35.54", which is 6.25" above normal. September began the same way as August ended; mild and wet. During the first nine days of the month, 8.51" of precipitation were recorded, which was the majority of the monthly rainfall. Moist, sub-tropical air from Mexico was being pushed into the area, and when combined with an unstable atmosphere, triggered widespread showers and thunderstorms. On the 9th, a cold front moved through the area, dropping temperatures and triggering the last heavy rainfall of the month. Maximum temperatures rebounded into the lower to middle 90s by the middle of the month. On the 23rd, a polar cold front from Canada moved through, bringing cooler and drier weather, which lasted through the end of September.
