Texas Climate Report: April 1998
For the second month in a row, cooler than normal conditions continued across nearly the entire state. Overall, the cool temperatures broke records in Southern and Eastern Texas mainly during the second half of the month. In regards to precipitation, the entire Lone Star State experienced a dry month. Below normal precipitation occurred in all the first order stations in Texas. San Antonio and Midland both endured the driest April on record with their monthly rainfall totals equaling 0.05" and 0.00", respectively.
The first eleven days of April greeted Texas rather pleasantly. Mostly all of Texas saw negative temperature departures during this period, while also receiving below normal precipitation. Even with these negative departures, Galveston was able to reach a new record high temperature of 84°F on the third. Only two cold fronts managed to make it all the way through, each producing small amounts of rain in spotty locations across the state. There was not any severe weather reported with these frontal passages.
During the next week, the negative temperatures anomalies were spatially vast, but much more extreme in the Panhandle and extreme West Texas. Amarillo, Lubbock, and El Paso all observed below normal monthly temperatures. On the 18th, with this cool weather reaching the coastal bend, both Corpus Christi and Brownsville claimed new lowest maximum temperatures for that day with 64°F and 68°F respectively. Precipitation continued to be below normal with only Beaumont rising above normal with a weekly total of 1.25".
On the 22nd and the 23rd, record low temperatures (49°F, 48°F) were observed in Corpus Christi as a cool and dry air mass was centered over the heart of Texas. Both Houston and College Station also set new record low temperatures on the 22nd. In both cities the temperature dropped to 44°F during the clear night. The last two weeks of April saw the magnitude of the negative temperature anomalies increase drastically. Throughout the state departures ranging from -1.0°F to -8.0°F could be found. Severe weather was spawned by a deepening low pressure system that was located in North Central Texas on the 26th and 27th of the month. The strong storms spread from the Panhandle through Central Texas. Many counties received hail ranging from dime size to baseball size in diameter. Tornadoes were also quite numerous with these storms and were reported in a number of counties such as Castro, Coryell, Crosby, Hale, Haskell, Parker, Shackelford, and Travis. The strongest tornado reported was an F2.
