Texas Climate Report: January 1998
The negative temperature departures which dominated the state of Texas throughout the final quarter of 1997 quickly disappeared during the first month of 1998. Warmer than normal temperatures covered the Lone Star State in January as magnitudes of departures averaged between +5°F and +6°F. The greatest departures occurred in Central Texas where Austin (+7.6°F), San Antonio (+7.1°F) and College Station (+7.1°F) all had mean monthly temperatures greater than 7°F above normal, warm enough to place January within the tenth percentile of their respective temperature records. In general, the state was divided in two parts with regards to precipitation. A line extending from the Western Panhandle to the Upper Coast separated below normal precipitation to the Southwest from above normal precipitation to the Northeast.
The first ten days of 1998 were not very pleasant ones to start off the new year for certain parts of Texas. Although temperatures were mild, slow moving storms dumped large amounts of rain on sections in the eastern half of the state, primarily from the 4th to the 6th of January. These storms produced over three inches at Beaumont and Houston, over four inches in Dallas and Galveston and nearly six inches in Waco. Rainfall totals were two to three inches greater in some isolated locations. The heavy precipitation combined with previously saturated ground resulted in widespread flash flood warnings, street flooding and damage to homes from residential flooding. Many evacuations occurred along the San Jacinto and Trinity Rivers, where 24-hour rainfall totals approached seven inches at the end of the first week of the month.
During the middle of the second week, a weak cold front stretching from Bryan/College Station to Fort Stockton provided the lifting mechanism which produced more severe weather for East Texas on the 11th. A tornado touched down three times near Giddings (Lee County) damaging sheds and trees. Funnel clouds were detected in Cass, Morris and Titus Counties in Northeast Texas where tornadoes touched down only intermittently. The precipitation from the upper-level low pressure system was very heavy at times producing scattered street flooding. Ten days later on the 21st, atmospheric conditions were once again ideal for the occurrence of severe weather. With a cold front traversing very slowly across the state, supercell thunderstorms formed producing large hail and several tornadoes in Southeast Texas. Lee, Bastrop, Leon, Grimes, Madison and Jackson Counties all reported tornadoes late in the afternoon or early in the evening. Robertson, Lee, Grimes and Chambers Counties reported golf ball-sized hail while portions of Ellis and Burleson Counties experienced baseball-sized hail.
Temperatures continued to stay mild across Texas and skies cleared for most of the last week of January, allowing many sections to dry out from the drenching weather of the previous weeks. The month could not end however, without another batch of storms in the Eastern half of the state on the 31st. San Antonio (2.05") and Kingsville (1.12") both received significant precipitation associated with a low pressure system that sat directly in the heart of Central Texas on the that last day of the month.
