Texas Climate Report: August 1998
Throughout the month of August all but three of the first order stations in Texas experienced above normal mean monthly temperatures. Precipitation on the other hand, divided the state into two separate regions. About half of the state received below normal precipitation, while the other half dealt with a wetter than normal August. The remnants of Tropical Storm Charley contributed greatly to the precipitation totals in South and Southeast Texas when they slammed into the Gulf Coast and moved across South Central Texas between the 22nd and the 26th of August.
August began right where July left off with extreme heat and dry conditions continuing to plague Texas. Early on in the month, daily high temperature records were quite common among cities like Houston, College Station, Victoria, Waco, and Dallas Fort Worth. College Station also set another interesting record when it reached 30 days in a row of 100°F or higher temperatures on August 4th when the temperature climbed 102°F. The extreme heat and drought conditions in North Texas were blamed for two train derailments and also for grass and brush fires that destroyed hundreds of acres of land.
Finally, as the subtropical high began to break down, storm systems were able to progress as far south as Texas and bring some much needed relief from the heat. The streaks of triple digit heat ended all throughout Texas with spotty showers bringing moisture to some of the drought stricken areas in the state during the second week of August. San Antonio reached 36 days of 100°F heat this year, breaking their old record of 33 days which has stood since 1948. Precipitation-wise, Brownsville received 0.13" of rain on the 15th which ended a 50-day spell without measurable precipitation.
Nearing the end of August dry conditions continued across Northern Texas while the focus in the South was on Tropical Storm Charley which was gradually heading toward the coast. Charley made landfall near Port Aransas, Texas bringing some well needed moisture to the drought areas of South Central Texas, but also causing some localized flash flooding. Victoria set a new record daily rainfall total with 2.43" of rain on the 22nd. 17.03" of rain fell in Del Rio on August 23rd setting a record for the most rainfall ever in a calendar day. Del Rio also experienced its wettest month ever, with 20.93" of rain. Flash floods that were created from Charley swept south from the Hill Country to Del Rio killing six people, injuring fifty-six others, and damaging over 400 homes.
