Texas Climate Report: July 1998
During the month of July, anomalously dry and warm conditions continued to persist throughout the entire state. Mean monthly temperature departures from normal averaged about 4.0°F across the first-order stations in Texas, with the largest departures occurring in North Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth, 6.3°F) and in Southwest Texas (Del Rio, 6.5°F). Accompanying these positive temperature departures were small amounts of precipitation which averaged about 39% of normal across the first-order stations. All but three of these stations in Texas received less than half of the normal amount for the month.
For the entire state in general, July 1998 was the second warmest July on record. July was also the hottest month ever observed for the entire world, eclipsing July 1997 as the new record holder. In fact, each month of 1998 has surpassed its corresponding average world temperature record. For Texas, July observations were merely extensions of the conditions already experienced during late spring and early summer. Del Rio (91.7°F), College Station (88.6°F), San Antonio (88.1°F) and Austin (88.0°F) all recorded their hottest average monthly July temperature on record. Of these stations, Del Rio (103.1°F) and College Station (101.1°F) also set all-time records for the average maximum daily temperature in July. Stations in which the second hottest July was observed include Corpus Christi (86.7°F), Midland (86.8°F) and Dallas-Fort Worth (91.6°F).
There are other ways to view how warm conditions have been throughout Texas. The minimum daily temperature in Dallas-Fort Worth remained above 80°F on 26 days out of the entire month. This shattered the previous record for any month of 16 days (August 1952), while at the same time breaking the record for an entire year of 22 days set in 1925 and 1980. Sequences of days observing maximum temperatures greater than or equal to 100°F also were quite impressive. Beginning on July 6, Waco and Dallas-Fort Worth began a streak which would ultimately end at 29 days; at College Station, the streak would end at 30 days, breaking their previous record of 26 days set in 1917.
Brownsville received only a trace of precipitation in July, matching a record that was set just last year. From April through July, San Antonio, College Station, Lubbock and Houston all set records for the lowest amount of precipitation received during that four month period, observing only 11%, 14%, 23% and 34% of normal rainfall, respectively.
