Texas Climate Report: September 1998
Temperatures for the month of September were once again above normal for the residents of Texas. The distribution of precipitation for September was very similar to the precipitation distribution of August for the Lone Star State. The southern and eastern parts of Texas dealt with above normal precipitation while the western and northern most areas continued to receive little in the way of rainfall. Interestingly, once again most of the rainfall in the above normal areas was due to another tropical storm. This time however, it was Tropical Storm Frances that made landfall on the Texas Coast, between Corpus Christi and Victoria on the early Friday morning of September 11th.
September began with extreme heat overspreading all of the Central States, including Texas. On the 4th, both Dallas/Fort Worth and Waco set high temperature records with 108°F and 106°F respectively. The 108°F reading in Dallas/Fort Worth was also the hottest temperature on record for the month of September. For the year, the mercury has reached 100°F or better on 56 days in Dallas/Fort Worth making this the second hottest summer on record second only to the summer of 1980 where 100°F or better was reached on 69 days. The summer of 1998 was however the hottest summer on record for the residents of Brownsville, breaking the record that had stood since 1980.
Rainfall in excess of 4 inches fell across southeastern Texas when Tropical Storm Frances made landfall on the 11th. Galveston received 8.02" of rain on the 10th alone and a total of 9.32" from September 9-12. Brownsville collected 7.11" during the first 12 days of September including a daily record precipitation total of 4.53" on the 9th. As the remnants of Frances moved north, South Central Texas was left with a weak upper air disturbance over the area causing a favorable environment for rain from the 14th to the 17th. Austin and Victoria measured 2.02" and 1.37" of rain, respectively, on the 15th, setting two new record daily rainfall totals for that day in September.
During the latter part of the month, southern Texas began to dry out as northwestern Texas remained extremely dry with temperatures once again beginning to climb with the onset of some more extreme heat. The warming was the result of southwesterly winds at the surface. On September 21st, Abilene set a new record daily high temperature with 101°F. The low temperature at Midland only fell to 76°F on the 22nd, which broke the record for the warmest low temperature ever recorded on that date. On the 29th, the excessive heat was able to make it as far south as Galveston and Houston where record high temperatures (94°F, 95°F) were set for both sites.

Bold-italics indicate a value broke or tied the record from a previous year. *Dep.: Departure of the monthly average temperature from the 1961-1990 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Perc. Norm.: Monthly precipitation total divided by 1961-1990 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Deg. Days: Computed daily as the departure of the daily average temperature from 65°F and aggregated over the entire month. *Heating degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a -1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. *Cooling degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a +1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. |
