Texas Climate Report: January 1999
The first month of 1999 was a warm one for the residents of Texas. Warmer than normal temperatures covered the Lone Star State in January as magnitudes of departures averaged between +4°F and +7°F. By the time January finally ended, Brownsville had reported 13 days where the temperature reached or exceeded 80°F. This tied with January 1957 and 1982 as the 5th most days in January with highs 80°F or more. In general, the southern three-quarters of Texas were dry during January 1999. The High Plains, Low Rolling Plains, and North Central Texas were the only areas to receive above normal precipitation for the month. Amarillo, where 2.67" of rain were reported in January, set a new total monthly precipitation record.
The month began with a low-pressure system tracking across North Texas on the 1st. The trailing cold front was responsible for the generation of severe storms in Eastern and Southern Texas. Numerous observations of hail and tornadoes were reported in the counties where the storms passed over. Some of the counties that were affected by the storms were Bell, Jack, Wise, Milam, Live Oak, Walker, Trinity, and Harris Counties. Following the passage of the cold front, temperatures dropped considerably in Texas. From the 2nd to the 7th, warm and moist air began to build northward from the Gulf of Mexico. This continued up until the 8th when a cold front swept through Texas bringing cooler and drier air in behind it.
During the middle part of the month, weather systems continually passed to the north leaving Texas dry and warm. With no cold air being brought down from the north, warm air was once again allowed to build northward in Texas. On the 17th, record high temperatures were set for Brownsville and Austin with temperature readings climbing to 86°F and 81°F respectively. Both College Station (79°F) and San Antonio (82°F) tied record high temperatures for that day. The following 7 days (18th-24th) saw record high temperatures being broken for many areas in Texas. Cities where high temperature records were set for this time period were San Angelo, Midland, Abilene, Houston, and Corpus Christi. The night of the 21st was a stormy one for the residents of North Central and East Texas. Storms triggered by a passing cold front dropped hail ranging from 0.75" to 2" in diameter on many locations.
During the final 3 days of January a slow moving frontal system brought heavy rain to many areas in Eastern Texas. On the 29th, a new record 24-hour rainfall was set at the Waco Regional Airport when 1.74" of rain were recorded. This total broke the old record of 0.86" previously set in 1922. As the system passed, some cooler and drier air moved over Texas for the last day of January.
