Texas Climate Report: June 1999
June brought welcome rains to most of the state with seventeen of the twenty stations receiving near normal to above normal rainfall. Half of the twenty stations reported ten or more precipitation days. El Paso and San Angelo reported twice their normal June amounts, and Del Rio had 266% of their normal rainfall. Only Dallas/Fort worth and Waco were significantly below normal, reporting 33% and 15%, respectively. Temperatures were slightly below normal for extreme West Texas and the Panhandle, as well as San Antonio and Victoria, while the rest of the state recorded temperatures near normal to about one degree above normal. The maximum temperature in Texas for June was 105°F, recorded in El Paso on the 30th, and the lowest temperature was 48°F, occurring in Amarillo on the 17th.
The month started out hot for much of the state, with temperatures over 100°F in McAllen and Laredo on the 1st. There were many reports of large hail in North Central Texas on the 1st and in the Panhandle on the 2nd. On the 5th and 6th, a cold front extending down from a low pressure system in the upper Great Plains caused heavy rain, high winds, and large hail in several counties in Central Texas. San Angelo reported over five inches of rain, and a tornado was spotted in Fisher County.
On the 10th and the 11th, thunderstorms formed along the dry line in West Texas. Wichita Falls and Abilene recorded rainfall amounts of 2.57" and 1.38", respectively, and a tornado touched down in Haskell County. There were also several reports of baseball and softball sized hail, also in the Low Rolling Plains region, during the late evening hours of the 10th. Across the state to the east, Port Arthur was receiving the greatest 24-hour rainfall of the month (4.34"). Most of the northern half of the state reported thunderstorms on the 12th and the 13th that formed along a stationary front. Lubbock received 2.44 inches, and Lufkin received 2.38 inches. Many roads were flooded, including a portion of I-20, which was closed due to flooding near Sweetwater in Nolan County. In Scurry County, one person was killed when their car was washed off the road.
Gulf moisture moved into Texas on the 20th, bringing copious amounts of rain for most of the state. Thunderstorms were reported in nearly every region. Bexar, Real, and Uvalde counties had numerous reports of flooding, and the cloudy skies kept temperatures down well below normal. Austin, San Antonio, and Midland all reported record low maxima on the 20th. Some of the heaviest rain of the month fell on the 25th in East Texas. The greatest amounts were measured in Tyler (3.92"), Beaumont/Port Arthur (3.44"), College Station (2.60"), Longview (2.33"), and Lufkin (1.73").
