Texas Climate Report: January 2000
The start of the New Year saw 34 maximum temperature records either tied or broken as a warm trend spread across the state. Monthly mean temperatures were above the 30-year normal for every major station in Texas. In the Lower Valley, Brownsville recorded 17 days this month with maximum temperatures greater than 80°F, the 3rd highest total in their history. Precipitation for much of the state was below normal, with the exceptions being Austin, College Station, Midland, Victoria, and Waco. Both El Paso and Lubbock recorded no precipitation for the month of January after receiving above-normal rainfall for the month of December.
January began with relatively warm temperatures throughout the state. However, a low pressure system swept down from Canada across the Midwest, blowing cold air into Texas on the 2nd. Record low temperatures were set in Austin on the 2nd (14°F) and the 5th (14°F), and also in College Station on the 5th (19°F). Another frontal system on the 6th kept temperatures cool and brought much needed precipitation to the southern parts of the state. Record rainfalls were recorded on the 7th in Austin (2.46"), College Station (1.60"), and San Antonio (1.21").
Cool weather did not last, as southerly winds and warm temperatures returned in the second week of January, with many stations setting or tying numerous maximum temperature records. On the 19th, eleven major stations set high temperature records, with Del Rio recording a scorching 90°F. Meanwhile, a low pressure system formed over Illinois on the 19th, with the associated cold front moving south through Texas on the 20th, briefly bringing cool temperatures back to Texas.
After another short warm period for Southern and Central Texas, a series of cold fronts entered Texas, bringing chilly weather for the rest of the month. A low pressure system formed over the Panhandle and moved east, cooling down the northern portions of the state. Another low pressure system from the west brought even colder temperatures to the state on the 26th and 27th. Up to 6 inches of snow fell in parts of the Panhandle as these fronts entered Texas.
