Texas Climate Report: July 2000
Drought conditions worsened throughout Texas during July as every station received less than 50% of its normal rainfall amount, except for El Paso (103%) and Lubbock (87%). Two stations recorded no measurable precipitation (College Station and Dallas/Fort Worth), and three more, Abilene (0.01"), Corpus Christi (0.01"), and San Angelo (0.02"), had near zero measurements. Unlike June, when nine stations recorded below-normal mean temperatures, every major station experienced above-normal mean temperatures during July. Del Rio and Wichita Falls recorded average maximum temperatures at or above the 100 degree mark, with values of 101.8°F and 100.0°F, respectively.
July was relatively uneventful in terms of significant weather occurrences. No severe weather was reported during the month as only two cold fronts passed into Texas, both stalling in the central portions of the state. This allowed temperatures to rise well into the 90s for much of the state and remain there for the entire month. At least 69 temperature records were either tied or broken during July. However, seventeen records were extreme low minimum temperatures, highlighting the dry conditions experienced throughout the month.
The month began with dry and warm conditions, as most of the state recorded temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. No major systems made their way into Texas during the first half of July. On the 13th, a trough of low pressure extended into the Panhandle and triggered showers that dumped 1.46" inches of rain on Lubbock. This was an exception, however. The lack of cold front activity allowed temperatures to rise into the low 100s for a large portion of Texas towards the end of the second week of July.
Temperatures remained mostly in the upper 90s and lower 100s for the rest of July, until two successive cold fronts moved into Texas on the 22nd and the 29th. The first front stalled in North Texas, just south of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The second front fared better as it reached the Austin area before becoming stationary. This front triggered scattered showers, which brought much needed rain to parts of the state. However, it was not enough to significantly reduce precipitation deficits.
