Texas Climate Report: September 2000
The beginning of September continued the trend set this summer as extreme heat plagued much of the state. On the 4th, all-time maximum temperature records were either set or tied at Austin (110°F), College Station (112°F), Corpus Christi (107°F), Galveston (101°F, tied), Houston (109°F), San Antonio (109°F), and Victoria (110°F). Again on the 5th, all-time maximum temperature records were set at Austin (112°F), Corpus Christi (109°F), Galveston (104°F), San Antonio (111°F), and Victoria (111°F). This caused most stations, with the exception of Austin, to be well above their normal average temperatures.
September was also an extremely dry month. Every first order station in Texas (except Galveston) recorded below-normal precipitation for the month. El Paso, Lubbock and Midland recorded no rain at all. As a result of these extremely dry conditions, 188 counties in Texas are under outdoor burn bans, and wildfire danger is "high" to "extreme" in all but four counties. However, Dallas/Fort Worth did receive 0.01"of precipitation on the 23rd, halting the record 84 consecutive days of rain-free weather that gripped the area.
According to the Climate Prediction Center, West Texas is experiencing "extreme drought" conditions, and the Lower Valley and East Texas are experiencing "moderate drought" conditions. The rest of the state is experiencing "severe drought" conditions (classifications are based on the Palmer Index). In the High Plains, Low Rolling Plains and Lower Valley regions, the crop moisture index is "severely dry," while the rest of the state is "abnormally dry" to "excessively dry." With normal precipitation forecasted for October, conditions are not expected to dramatically improve.
The first major front of the season moved through Texas in late September. On the 23rd, a polar front from Canada moved into the state, causing temperatures to plummet in many portions of Texas. Several stations set or tied record low temperatures on the 25th and 26th. On the 25th, Amarillo recorded a low temperature of 33°F, the lowest temperature recorded at a first order station this month.

Bold-italics indicate a value broke or tied the record from a previous year. *Dep.: Departure of the monthly average temperature from the 1961-1990 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Perc. Norm.: Monthly precipitation total divided by 1961-1990 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Deg. Days: Computed daily as the departure of the daily average temperature from 65°F and aggregated over the entire month. *Heating degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a -1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. *Cooling degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a +1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. |
