Texas Climate Report: January 2002
January 2002 started off rather cold, but temperatures quickly warmed resulting in above normal mean temperatures for the entire state. Highest maximum temperatures reached into the 80s for most of the stations, contributing to above normal temperatures. While temperatures were above normal, precipitation was below normal for most locations except for Amarillo, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, and Dallas/Fort Worth, which received 4.90". Lubbock reported 0.8" of snow on the 24th, and on the 1st, Waco saw a trace of snow, while Mi–dland received 0.8".
The beginning of the month started considerably cooler than normal, due to the cold air that filtered in following a cold front passage during the last of December. A front moved through the area on the 5th, which did not change the temperatures very much, but did bring some rainfall to the area. Beaumont/Port Arthur acquired 1.61", while Austin got 1.10". As high pressure moved in following the cold front, temperatures warmed up considerably with highs in the mid 60s to low 70s.
The middle of the month continued this trend of warm temperatures and dry conditions, except for a few stations along the Gulf coast, such as Galveston that got 0.59" of rain on the 13th. Naturally these nice days did not help with the dry conditions that were being felt in the Western part of the state. Areas in the High Plains region and Trans Pecos were reported as being in moderate to severe drought conditions as reported by the Plamer Drought Severity Index.
The latter part of the month had temperatures close to normal to slightly above normal, and some precipitation fell with the passage of a couple of weak disturbances on the 19th and 22nd. A stronger cold front passed through on the 25th helping to add rain to the precipitation totals and moderating temperatures. Lufkin reported 2.28" of rain, while Texarkana got 1.03". Temperatures rebounded during the last few days of the month, with spring-like conditions evident throughout the state. But on the 31st, a cold front passed through bringing some rain to the northern portions of the state, and starting February off rather cool.
