Texas Climate Report: October 2002
October 2002 will be remembered for the ample precipitation received across almost the entire state of Texas. Numerous daily, as well as monthly rainfall records were broken across the state. Temperatures across the area from El Paso, Austin, College Station, and northward were slightly below normal. Mean temperatures ranged from -0.6°F to -5.3°F compared to normal monthly readings. From Del Rio to Houston, and southward, temperatures were slightly above normal with departures ranging from 0.1°F to 3.3°F above normal for the month. The cooler weather from the South Central Texas area and northward can be partially contributed to the sub-tropical branch of the jet stream training low pressure disturbances along it, and giving some areas in Texas 18 days of rain-cooled temperatures. Also, numerous cold fronts from Canada trekked southward, and made their way into the Central Texas area, where they usually moderated to a stationary front once passing the Austin area. This area of temperature separation can clearly be noted on the departure from normal map below.
Precipitation totals from the month of October were quite impressive across the state of Texas. A few monthly totals are listed: Austin (9.11"), Brownsville (8.31"), College Station (9.79"), Corpus Christi (9.50"), Dallas/Fort Worth (6.44"), Del Rio (7.40"), Galveston (11.81"), Houston (14.65"), Port Arthur (14.05"), San Antonio (7.64"), Victoria (8.55"), and Waco at (9.00"). As the temperatures were kept slightly cooler than normal in upper portions of the South Central region, and northward, by the sub-tropical jet stream, this also caused large amounts of precipitation to fall over a wide span of the state. The pumping in of moisture off the Gulf of Mexico, and the moisture-laden flow of the sub-tropical jet stream aided in providing the perfect dynamics for persistent precipitation over the same areas. As a result, numerous flood watches and warnings were issued.
Numerous reports of severe weather were reported in Texas this month. Hail and high wind reports were in abundance across Texas. In the South Central region, on the 8th, tornadoes were reported to the National Weather Service in Galveston. The 21st brought more severe weather to Texas with a spotter reported tornado in Nueces, Texas. On the 24th of October, a tornado ripped through Nueces County in Corpus Christi, heavily damaging the Del Mar College campus. One fatality and numerous injuries were reported. Also, on the 28th of the month, 8 tornadoes were reported to the National Weather Service by spotters, in the counties of Liberty, Harris, and Hardin. Unfortunately two deaths and numerous injuries occurred during this weather event.
