Texas Climate Report: April 2009
April 2009 brought many weather features unknown to the state for several months. Seven stations recorded temperatures at or below the mean monthly temperature and those that did report above average temperatures no more than a degree or two above average, except for Corpus Christi, which recorded 3.5°F above normal. Some of this warming however could be attributed to very little rainfall for the area; it received 0.10" of precipitation for the entire month. According to the drought monitor, the extreme southern portion of Texas, including Brownsville, Corpus Christ, and Victoria, are experiencing the most severe drought conditions in Texas. East Texas has not only been relatively cool, but has experienced torrential rainfall events, including more than 5 inches in 24 hours in Wichita Falls and Port Arthur. Some local communities reported almost 6 inches of rain in 1 hour! Rainfall totals reached near record levels in Houston, where flooding was a major concern during the last part of the month. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts La Nina to continue its transition into neutral conditions.

Bold-italics indicate a value broke or tied the record from a previous year. *Dep.: Departure of the monthly average temperature from the 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Perc. Norm.: Monthly precipitation total divided by 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Deg. Days: Computed daily as the departure of the daily average temperature from 65°F and aggregated over the entire month. *Heating degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a -1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. *Cooling degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a +1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. |
