Texas Climate Report: January 2009
As La Nina conditions begin to develop in the Pacific Ocean, we see characteristic signs associated with the phenomena in statewide monthly weather. Following the trend of months in late 2008, Texas experienced an extraordinarily dry January. Not one station received even half of their normal monthly precipitation for January. In Texas specifically, with Dallas/Fort Worth an exception, no station received more than a third of their average January precipitation. In fact, nine of the first-order stations in Texas received less than 10% of their average precipitation. Hardest hit were the southwestern, west-central, and far northern portions of Texas, including Brownsville, El Paso, San Angelo, and Amarillo. For example, San Angelo has seen only 0.32" of rain in the past 3 months (0.09" in the past 2 months). Basically, the entire state of Texas is enveloped in some stage of drought.
Temperatures were also abnormal; in particular, every first-order station recorded above average temperatures for the month, from slightly above average (0.5°F) to unseasonably warm temperatures (4°F). Forecasts point to another warm month in February and a continuation of very dry conditions. Even with severe ice storms which plagued parts of Texas coupled with below average minimum temperatures, maximum temperatures reached up to 8°F above average in some places. Most sites recorded an average maximum temperature departure of 5°F-6°F degrees, a very noticeable and unusual departure.
