Texas Climate Report: June 2009
June 2009 was a record breaking month for many areas of Texas, especially Southeast Texas. Houston and Galveston experienced their driest May and June in recorded history, about 5% of their normal precipitation for the two months. College Station recorded a trace of rain for the month, while Victoria had one hundredth of an inch. Southeast Texas and the Gulf Coast region was the driest parts of Texas; most of these areas received about a quarter of their normal June precipitation. The Panhandle and Central Texas received closer to average rainfall, while Northeast and West Texas received slightly more than average. Most of the rain, however, occurred in intense episodes, as seen from 24-hour totals of more than 3 inches that fell in Dallas/Fort Worth and around 2 inches that fell in Del Rio. Lubbock, though not receiving quite its average, recorded measurable precipitation on 15 days during the month.
Temperatures were exceedingly high for most of the state. El Paso is the sole first-order station to report a negative departure from the average. Most stations, however, reached well over 100°F. Notice how the gulf controls the temperature of near-coastal cities, like Brownsville, Corpus Christi, and Galveston. Though hot and more humid, maximum temperatures cannot reach exorbitant levels for those cities near the coast. Forecasts point to a continuing hot, dry summer, though El Nino conditions are predicted to begin sometime in the fall.
