Texas Climate Report: May 2009
May conditions followed those of the first three months of 2009, with warm temperatures and little rainfall. Only the Panhandle of Texas remained cooler than average during the month, while portions of southern and western Texas reached nearly 4°F above average. Only extreme West, Northeast, and South Texas, as well as Abilene area, received their normal monthly precipitation. The Upper Coast was especially dry; cities like Houston and Galveston received about 5% of the normal rainfall. In fact, most stations reported less than a third of their normal rainfall for May. La Nina conditions have dissipated, leaving El Nino neutral conditions forecast to continue into the summer. Corpus Christi, Victoria, and other southern cities have been plagued by exceptional drought these past few months, while northern and eastern portions of Texas have received enough rain to be classified as either drought free or slightly dry. During the middle of the month, a cold front swept through the state, bringing abundant lightning, five tornadoes and golf ball sized hail to Central Texas. Though the majority of the state is dry, isolated showers brought several inches of rain to various parts of Texas in a few hours. Residents on the Gulf Coast are on the lookout for the next big storm as the 2009 Hurricane Season begins.
