Texas Climate Report: March 2014
March continued the trend of cold and dry conditions set by previous months. Temperatures were still sitting upwards of four degrees below normal for the eastern half of the state, and rainfall still came out below normal for the month for all but a few locations. Most rainfall came with the series of cold fronts in the first half of the month, but the biggest story for the month was the late season winter weather that occurred as far south as Houston from the 2nd to the 4th. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow hit the Panhandle and North Texas first, shutting down schools and interstates across the region. The cold front then pushed south and brought thundersleet to areas just to the west of Houston but with heavy freezing rain as the main issue. Even still with this event rainfall was still down, and the drought took advantage of the situation and expanded into several new territories. Extreme drought reclaimed its old stomping grounds in the Panhandle and Hill Country, while in the Rio Grande Valley some improvement was seen with all signs of drought leaving by the end of the month.
