Texas Climate Report: January 2018

Drought in Texas was emphasized during the month of January, and the Panhandle suffered the brunt of the dry conditions after going more than 100 days without measurable rain. The total column soil moisture in January was between 50 mm and 100 mm below normal in North Central Texas and between 100 mm and 150 mm below normal in parts of Northeast Texas. The eastern Panhandle also saw a small area of soil moistures between 100 mm and 150 mm below normal. At the end of the month, nearly the entire Panhandle was in extreme drought (almost 12 percent of the state), close to 18 percent of Texas was in severe drought, more than 35 percent of the state was in moderate drought, and over 25 percent of Texas was abnormally dry. Less than 10 percent of the state drought-free, which is a tenth of the area that was drought-free one year ago.
