Texas Climate Report: October 2017
Precipitation in October was below normal for the majority of Texas, except for parts of South Texas and the Panhandle, which saw slightly above normal rainfall. Some areas in Southeast Texas and the Upper Coast experienced between four and six inches below normal precipitation, while parts of the upper Panhandle received between two and four inches above normal precipitation. In terms of temperature, South and South Central Texas saw near normal to below normal temperatures. Areas in western South Texas experienced temperatures as much as four to six degrees below normal. Far West Texas and parts of the upper Panhandle saw temperatures between two and four degrees above normal. The past month top one meter soil moistures were between 50 mm and 75 mm above normal in the western Panhandle and between 25 mm and 50 mm above normal in parts of South and Southeast Texas. Northeast and Deep South Texas experienced top one meter soil moistures as much as 25 mm to 50 mm below normal. October ended with a very small amount of severe drought (D2) in South Texas, less than two and a half percent of moderate drought (D1) in Northeast and South Texas, and more than 26 percent of abnormally dry (D0) land spread through North, West, and South Texas.
